I am taking a class involving this book again, and have been reacquainted with how awesome it is. It is in fact almost unnecessary to take a class to learn the material if you have this book and enough motivation.
Some people are somewhat put off by the informal, conversational writing style, the way it forces you to work through problems rather than handing everything to you, and it's somewhat non-standard notation. I must say, if the writing style is more difficul..more

The style of the book is very concise. In my opinion the majority of the examples are a bit abstract. Still the explanations are clear and the main points are indicated in such a way that you cannot miss them. For instance, in the story about Faraday’s law, the sentence

The book is intuitive. Written in a way that helps you understand the material instead of making you feel like an imbecile. Lots of examples and the problems are peppered throughout the text instead of lumped up at the end. While reading the book, I felt like I attended his classes. He emphasizes what is not usually emphasized in other books. The author even jokes at some pages which is really nice while reading!

I wish I had read it when, I first heard about electromagnetic fields. It's awesome book, explains all stuff. The most interesting point was 'why charges reside on surface at electrostatic equilibrium?' The answer wasn't like. If that's not the case then it won't be electrostatic but 'this configuration has minimum energy which makes the system more stable and that's why charges tend to reside on surface if they can!'
The downside to the use of this book, however great it may be for an undergraduate freshman is the use of some hand waiving leading to loss of generality without much justification to do so.
Nevertheless, it is perhaps one of the best books to understand the basics of classical electrodynamics.

Audioreader rated it it was amazingGriffiths builds up the Classical Theory of Electromagnetism in an easy step-by-step fashion, with practical problems and examples to give the reader a feeling of familiarity and understanding. As the book progresses, he lets the light shine from a most beautiful, symmetrical, and satisfying theory.
I love it, a real joy for the undergrads learning EM, fun and easy to read (except chapter 9 which is the more 'applied' one), you can feel the author speaking 'with you'; more than 'to you', unlike most dull textbooks.
It will be forever in my favorite textbooks ever, it felt so good when I finish reading it.

This is pretty much accepted as the best book out there for learning electrodynamics. Very good explanations, probably the best example problems of any textbook I've had, and very thorough.

Griffiths connects almost everything you learn in Freshman physics. The story starts with how have we learned simple electric and magnetic fields behave experimentally, and what are equations that model that? Coulomb's law, Biot-Savart law. Electric fields of stationary charges and magnetic fields of steady currents. Then chapter 7 is the climax. Maxwell's equations. E&M distilled to its essence.

Introduction to Electrodynamics is a textbook by the physicist David J. Griffiths. Generally regarded as a standard undergraduate text on the subject,[1] it began as lecture notes that have been perfected over time.[2] Its most recent edition, the fourth, was published in 2013 by Pearson and in 2017 by Cambridge University Press. This book uses SI units (the mks convention) exclusively. A table for converting between SI and Gaussian units is given in Appendix C.[3]
Griffiths said he was able to reduce the price of his textbook on quantum mechanics simply by changing the publisher, from Pearson to Cambridge University Press.[2] He has done the same with this one. (See the ISBN in the box to the right.)

The front cover has a picture of the handwritten Poisson's equations for electricity and magnetism on a chalkboard. The first inner cover contains vector identities, vector derivatives in Cartesian, spherical, and cylindrical coordinates, and the fundamental theorems of vector calculus. The second inner cover contains the basic equations of electrodynamics, the accepted values of some fundamental constants, and the transformation equations for spherical and cylindrical coordinates.[3]

Paul D. Scholten, a professor at Miami University (Ohio), opined that the first edition of this book offers a streamlined, though not always in-depth, coverage of the fundamental physics of electrodynamics. Special topics such as superconductivity or plasma physics are not mentioned. Breaking with tradition, Griffiths did not give solutions to all the odd-numbered questions in the book. Another unique feature of the first edition is the informal, even emotional, tone. The author sometimes referred to the reader directly. Physics received the primary focus. Equations are derived, explained, and the common misconception are addressed.[4]
According to Robeit W. Scharstein from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Alabama, the mathematics used in the third edition is just enough to convey the subject and the problems are valuable teaching tools that do not involve the 'plug and chug disease.' Although students of electrical engineering are not expected to encounter complicated boundary-value problems in their career, this book is useful to them as well, because of its emphasis on conceptual rather than mathematical issues. He argued that with this book, it is possible to skip the more mathematically involved sections to the more conceptually interesting topics, such as antennas. Moreover, the tone is clear and entertaining. Using this book 'rejuvenated' his enthusiasm for teaching the subject.[5]

Colin Inglefield, an associate professor of physics at Weber State University (Utah), commented that the third edition is notable for its informal and conversational style that may appeal to a large class of students. The ordering of its chapters and its contents are fairly standard and are similar to texts at the same level. The first chapter offers a valuable review of vector calculus, which is essential for understanding this subject. While most other authors, including those aimed at a more advanced audience, denote the distance from the source point to the field point by , Griffiths uses a script (see right).[note 1] Unlike some comparable books, the level of mathematical sophistication is not particularly high. For example, Green's functions are not anywhere mentioned. Instead, physical intuition and conceptual understanding are emphasized. In fact, care is taken to address common misconceptions and pitfalls. It contains no computer exercises. Nevertheless, it is perfectly adequate for undergraduate instruction in physics. As of June 2005, Inglefield has taught three semesters using this book.[6]
