Thanks. A couple things come to mind:
First make sure that 'hide empty drives' isn't enabled in Folder Options. This box should be off/unchecked:
Next, check Device Manager and see if the drive is listed under your CD/DVD devices:
If it is listed, but has a warning icon like mine does there, it means something is wrong with it. Double-click to find out what's wrong, and let me know.

Interesting. If you double-click it, does it say 'this device is operating normally'? So when you insert a disc now, am I correct in assuming that the icon in 'This PC' for the drive just stays as the generic icon and name? If you click it, does it say the device is not ready?
Let me also ask to be thorough, when you first place a CD or (especially DVD movies) into the drive, do you hear the drive spin up at all, and is there any LED light for when it's reading?

It does indeed say 'this device is operating normally'. And it seems, worryingly, that there isn't an icon for the drive in 'This PC'.
And yes, the drive starts spinning for about 35 seconds before stopping, and the LED light indicates the disc is being read.
Apologies if my problem isn't the simplest out there.

That's odd that it's not listed in This PC. Even if the drive didn't have a disc in it, as long as you turned off the option to 'hide empty drives', it should be showing there.
If this were my computer, I'd right-click and 'Uninstall' the drive from the Device Manager, then go to the manufacturer's website and download the newest edition of their driver again. Even if it's the version you already had, reinstalling it may fix whatever issue it had.
